Optogenetics

Why in news
Oct 2026
Optogenetics was honoured with the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on 5 October, awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels.
Key facts
- Optogenetics is the technique honoured by the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine: using light to control the activity of individual nerve cells.
- The foundation was the discovery of channelrhodopsins, light-gated ion channels found in algae, by Peter Hegemann. These proteins open in response to light, letting ions flow across cell membranes.
- Karl Deisseroth adapted these algal proteins for use in neuroscience, inserting them into neurons so researchers could switch specific brain cells on and off with light pulses.
- Optogenetics lets scientists map brain circuits with cell-level precision, offering hope for future treatments of conditions like blindness and Parkinson's disease.
- Georg Nagel shared the prize for his role in characterising these light-gated channels.
- 2025 vs 2026 Medicine contrast: 2025 honoured peripheral immune tolerance (Brunkow, Ramsdell, Sakaguchi) and regulatory T cells; 2026 honoured light-controlled neurons. One year the immune system, the next the nervous system.
UPSC relevance
Prelims
Prelims may ask what optogenetics is (light-controlled nerve cells), the key protein involved (channelrhodopsin, a light-gated ion channel from algae), and the 2026 Medicine laureates: Deisseroth, Hegemann and Nagel.
Mains
Mains GS-3: Optogenetics is a ready example for answers on biotechnology, neuroscience and the ethics of brain research. Pair it with the 2025 Medicine prize (immune tolerance) to show how Nobel recognition tracks the frontiers of life sciences.
