About this map
The lakes UPSC actually asks about: tectonic, volcanic, glacial, ox-bow, lagoon and artificial. Each marker names the type, the state, and the inlet or river it connects to.
Type-based elimination is the standard format: which of these is a lagoon, a crater lake, or man-made. Wular (largest freshwater), Chilika (largest brackish lagoon), Vembanad and Sambhar are permanent fixtures.
Ramsar status and the Montreux Record add a second layer: several lakes on this map are also Ramsar sites, and the exam crosses the two lists.
