UPSC CSE age and attempt limits
The age limit is counted as on 1 August of the examination year. The table below summarises the standard position from the official notification:
| Category | Age limit | Attempts |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS | 21 to 32 years | 6 |
| OBC | 21 to 35 years | 9 |
| SC / ST | 21 to 37 years | No limit (within the age window) |
Other eligibility conditions
- Education: a bachelor's degree from a recognised university is required. Candidates in their final year may apply for Prelims, but must have the degree by the time specified for the Mains application.
- Citizenship: for the IAS and IPS the candidate must be a citizen of India; for other services the notification allows certain other categories such as subjects of Nepal and Bhutan.
- Counting attempts: an attempt is counted when you appear for at least one paper of the Prelims. Applying without appearing does not use up an attempt.
Always verify against the official notification for the year you plan to apply, since the Commission can revise the rules. This page is a guide, not a substitute for the notification.
